Depart London Heathrow on Qantas Airways overnight flight to Melbourne for four nights at the centrally located Novotel on the stylish Collins Street, in a standard room on a room only basis. The hotel has an indoor swimming pool, fitness centre and the Lanes Restaurant and Bar.
Melbourne is famous for its trendy boutiques it is the capital of haut couture and cuisine in Australia, exploring this lovely city is a doddle with the Melbourne tram system; discover laneways teeming with cafes, bars and restaurant. Melbourne retains many of its wonderful ‘Victorian’ era buildings and monuments, making it a picturesque city to visit.
Head off to a day trip to the beaches or wineries, St. Kilda Melbourne’s seaside playground is just six kilometres from the Central Business District (CBD), take a leisurely stroll down the long palm lined boardwalk or relax on the white sandy beach.
At the end of your stay, there is a domestic flight from Melbourne to Hobart, where you will collect your hire car. Your first three nights in Hobart are at the Hobart Travelodge including daily breakfast. Tasmania is Australia’s smallest State or Territory making it an ideal fly drive destination.
Hobart retains many of its wonderful Georgian buildings do make sure you visit Salamanca Pace in Sullivans Cove, the heart of the city’s bustling waterfront. This cobblestoned square makes a wonderful afternoon out with art galleries, boutiques, bars and restaurants, do try Tasmania’s sumptuous wines. One of the few cities to retain its ‘convict’ remains, the Port Arthur Historic site on the Tasman Peninsula, surrounded by shark-infested waters, once notorious for being an inescapable prison gives you a sense of what life would have been like for the first settlers arriving from the United Kingdom.
After three nights in Hobart, there is a scenic drive to Strahan (approximately four hours) for one night at the Strahan Village Hotel, in a Hilltop Double room including breakfast. If time permits do join Gordon River Cruises, where you will experience Tasmania’s World Heritage wilderness, or do take a scenic flight over the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Stroll along the picturesque waterfront, take in the 19 century streetscapes or discover the West Coasts convict history and beginnings in the town’s museums and art galleries.
The following morning after breakfast, begin your 148 km drive to Cradle Mountain (approximately two hours) and check into the Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge at the edge of the spectacular World Heritage Lake St. Clair National Park for one night in a Pencil Pine Cabin including breakfast. This luxurious lodge is considered one of Australia’s most iconic wilderness experiences, with awe-inspiring scenery. Walk around Dove Lake, through forests of King Billy pines, past picturesque waterfalls, or challenge yourself with the 80 kilometre Overland Track, to Lake St. Clair, the deepest natural lake in Australia with view of Tasmania’s highest mountain Mount Ossa.
For a fabulous dining experience the Resorts Highland Restaurant is recognised as one of Tasmania’s premier dining experience, serving the very best of Tasmanian food and wine, for casual dining the Tavern Bar and Bistro serves bistro style meals in a more relaxed atmosphere.
After breakfast, you may explore more of this World Heritage site or continue your journey to Launceston, approximately 130 km almost a two-hour drive, where you will check into the Grand Chancellor Hotel, in a Deluxe room for two nights including daily breakfast.
Situated in the historic district of Launceston, is only a few minutes on foot to the CBD, Brisbane Street Mall and many of the notable attractions. Take time to visit Cataract Gorge, if you are an adrenalin seeker there is abseil and hang gliding around the gorge’s dramatic walls. If you haven’t managed to see a kangaroo, wombat or wallaby visit Narawntapu National Park. Take a boat trip to the fur seal colony of Tenth Island, see Tasmania’s little penguins at Low Head, or pan for sapphires near the tin mining town of Derby. Tasmania has become a famous wine growing area and this region is famous for its cool-climate wineries like Pipers Brook or Ninth Island so relax and enjoy the fabulous food complimented by local wines.
At the end of this wonderful adventure through Tasmania, drop your hire car off at the airport before boarding your flight from Launceston with onward connections to London Heathrow.
