Christchurch became a city by royal Charter on 31 July 1856 and is now officially the oldest established city in New Zealand. The Avon River runs through the centre of the city, its banks forming an urban park and a relaxing area to walk or hire a punt and have a relaxing afternoon drifting along the Avon. Visit the Canterbury Museum housed in the rather majestic colonial building, hop on a tram and explore this vibrant city. For spectacular views over the city, Canterbury Plains and onwards to the peaks of the Southern Alps, take the Christchurch Gondola to the Crater Rim at the top of the Port Hills; relax with a snack at the Red Rock Café with stunning 360 degree views.
Today enjoy a full day tour including one of the world’s iconic rail journeys, the Tranz Alpine Railway. Your tour from Christchurch, with a scenic tour through the city then onwards for a 45 minute Jetboat ride on one of New Zealand’s spectacular Rivers The Thames. Your journey continues with an exhilarating 4WD adventure across Mount Torlesse High Country Station, a 10,000-acre working cattle and sheep farm, fantastic fun off-roading with picturesque alpine scenery. Enjoy lunch at a quant country café, then continue along the historic State Highway 73 travelling over Porter’s Pass a mountain pass through the Canterbury region and the highest point on the state highway after Milford Road and Lindis Pass, arriving at Arthur’s Pass National Park. Board the world famous Tranz Alpine Train, sit back and relax, enjoy stunning scenery as your train travels through gorges and river valleys, over the Staircase Viaduct, standing 72 metres high, passing the lush farmlands of the Canterbury Plains as you travel back to Christchurch. On arrival at Christchurch Railway Station, you will be collected and returned to your hotel. The rest of the evening is at leisure.
